Brentwood Appoints New Police Chief
BRENTWOOD, CA – Brentwood City Manager, Donna Landeros, announced today that Mark D. Evenson has been appointed Police Chief for the City of Brentwood. Evenson was one of over 40 applicants vying to succeed Chief Mike Davies who announced his retirement earlier this year after 26 years with the Brentwood Police Department.
The selection process included screening by an executive recruitment firm, and in depth interviews by two panels. One panel consisted of community representatives and the other panel was police chiefs and a representative from the California Police Officers Standards and Training Office.
Evenson began his extensive 21 year career in law enforcement with the City of Seattle as a Police Officer in 1985. He was promoted through the ranks to Captain in 2001. From 2001-2002 Evenson served as Precinct Commander, supervising a staff of 165 sworn and non sworn employees. From 2002 to 2004 he served as Captain of the Internal Affairs Division, and from 2004 to present as Captain of the Training Section.
While employed by the City of Seattle, Evenson served a diverse population that has a strong tradition of community policing and problem solving. His experience includes budget oversight, labor relations, risk management, and policy implementations.
Evenson’s many accomplishments during his career with the City of Seattle include:
- Establishment of new patrol procedures which ensured officers worked with the community to identify neighborhood hot spots and allocate adequate and appropriate resources to mitigate problems;
- Development of a regional training curriculum, working with Violence Against Women Act, to improve domestic violence investigations;
- Design and implementation of written protocols to effectively deal with complaints of biased policing, unnecessary force, criminal investigations and performance issues.
Evenson received a Bachelors Degree from the University of Western Illinois in 2004. Evenson attended the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA and Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston University.
Evenson was raised in California and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he met his wife, Debi. He joined the Seattle Police Department after discharge and the couple raised three sons in a small community outside of Seattle. Evenson and his wife are looking forward to moving to Brentwood and becoming part of the community.
City Manager Landeros said, “I am extremely pleased that Mark Evenson chose the Brentwood Police Department to continue his outstanding career in law enforcement. He is passionate about community policing and his choice of Brentwood speaks very highly of our police department and our community.”
Chief Davies commented, “I am incredibly proud of the men and women who serve in the Brentwood Police Department. Mark Evenson will provide outstanding leadership and build on our tradition of providing the best service to our community.”
Evenson will assume his post as Police Chief on October 30.
