The position of Poet Laureate was created in 2002 to raise the level of awareness of poetry and the literary arts in Brentwood and to honor local poet Mary Jane Barnes, whose inaugural appointment expires in December 2004. Barnes came to Brentwood in 1950 and has since published 15 books of poetry from blank verse to haiku, short stories and a play. She has received numerous awards, including the 1988 honorary doctorate of literature from the World Academy of Arts and Culture and a 14-karat gold and jade crown known as the Golden Crown World Poetry Award, she received in 1990 from the World Poetry Research Institute in Korea. In that same year, Barnes was nominated for a Nobel Prize in literature.

On December 3rd the Arts Commission will host a farewell event in her honor to thank her for accepting the Poet Laureate post and to appoint her Poet Laureate Emeritus. The Poet Laureate post will remain vacant until the Arts Commission determines a qualified candidate to assume the post. Until then, the Arts Commission is developing a literary arts program in order to foster and support the literary arts in our community.
