Brentwood Hires Assistant City Manager

BRENTWOOD, CA – Karen Stein, the current Town Manager of Moraga, has accepted an offer to become Assistant City Manager for the City of Brentwood. Stein has a Masters of Public Administration from Cal State Hayward and a total of 14 years experience with the City of Lafayette and Moraga.

Brentwood initiated an extensive executive search for an Assistant City Manager back in April of this year. Shannon Executive Search initiated a nationwide recruitment. Shannon reviewed all of the applications for the city to form a possible interview list of candidates from the original pool of 120 applicants. City staff narrowed the interview list to 5 and conducted an all-day assessment center to thoroughly evaluate the candidates’ qualifications, strengths, weaknesses and management style. While all of the candidates performed well in the assessment center, one stood out as truly outstanding.

Following the extensive testing of the assessment center, and prior to making the formal offer to Stein, the city had Shannon do a thorough reference check. “This is the best set of references I have ever seen,” said City Manager John Stevenson. Such things as ‘integrity beyond reproach,’ ‘dedicated,’ ‘she likes to deal with the public,’ ‘she has the ability to get things done,’ and ‘she never asks anything of her staff that she’s not willing to do herself’ were typical comments throughout all of her references.

Stein will assume her new post on September 15, 2003. Her primary responsibilities will be to head the Human Resource Department and assist the City Manager in the day-to-day running of the city.
