Mayor Appoints New Commissioners

Brentwood Mayor Brian Swisher appointed four new Commissioners at the January 28th City Council meeting. Three appointments were made to the Planning Commission for a two-year term of service (2003-2004), and one to the Parks & Recreation Commission for a three-year term (2003-2005). The following is biographical information provided by the commissioners.

Jeff Schults, Planning Commissioner 2003-2004
A graduate of Leland High School in San Jose, California, Jeff spent 4 years in the US Navy as an Electronic Technician. He is one of the original Cisco Certified Internetworking Experts and worked in computer networking for 15+ years. Jeff retired 2+ years ago from Redback Networks. He has been married to wife Jan for nearly seventeen years and has three children: Lola, Rebecca and Kyle. Jeff and his family moved to Brentwood in 1994. Jeff is currently the President of the Liberty Union School District Educational Foundation, Director of Brentwood Police Activities League, Board member of Brentwood Pony Baseball, a member of the CornFest Executive Board, active in the Rotary club and a Brentwood Chamber member. Jeff is an active skier, swimmer, fisherman and all around sports fan.

Chris Becnel, Planning Commissioner 2003-2004
Chris is an attorney and CPA practicing in Brentwood. He is currently a director and is president-elect for 2003 of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and is a member and a past president of the Brentwood Rotary Club. Chris was appointed a Planning Commissioner last year by Mayor McPoland to complete the term of Chris Mosser who resigned. Mayor Swisher reappointed Chris this year. Chris resides in Brentwood with his wife Donna and has two children: Jennifer, who attends San Diego State and son Donald, a junior at Liberty High School, who plays on the varsity football team.

Joan Douglas, Planning Commissioner 2003-2004
Her first time being appointed a Planning Commissioner, Joan brings to the position more than 13 years of experience working in the environmental planning field for the private sector. Joan was born and raised in southern California until she moved to Brentwood in 2001, where she enjoys the small town atmosphere, rural lifestyle, and immense recreational opportunities. For fun, Joan enjoys road and mountain bicycling, and running along the Marsh Creek Trail. She is an avid fan of California history, and enjoys exploring cultural events in music, art, and travel.

Joan has a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Geography/Environmental Analysis from Cal State University, Fullerton, and a Land Use/Environmental Planning Certificate from University of California, Irvine. Currently, Joan is a Project Manager with LSA Associates, an environmental planning firm, in Point Richmond. She is also serving as Chapter Director for the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Association of Environmental Professionals, and is a member of the California Historical Society.

Tom Jones, Parks & Recreation Commissioner 2003-2005
Tom Jones and his wife, Jo, recently moved to Brentwood from San Ramon. He has operated his own public relations and advertising business since 1980 and is past president of the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club, a former member of the Board of Directors of the San Ramon Valley Community Services Group and the Tri-Valley Community Foundation. He is a member of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club.
