Proclaiming May 12-17, 2008 as National Bike Week

WHEREAS, as a result of national obesity trends, the City of Brentwood City Council Two-Year Action Plan, created a Health and Wellness Initiative which included community education on healthy choices and lifestyles; and

WHEREAS, on November 13, 2007, City Council approved the City of Brentwood Council/Administrative Policy 90-3, related to community wellness issues; and

WHEREAS, the City of Brentwood is a Bike Friendly Community; and

WHEREAS, the month of May is National Bike Month, whose mission is to get “more people cycling, more often” through a variety of cycling activities; and

WHEREAS, Bike Week provides a unique opportunity to promote cycling as a great way to “have fun, get fit, and feel free” while reducing traffic congestion, and benefiting our environment through reduced auto emissions;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I Robert Taylor, Mayor of the City of Brentwood, proclaim May 12-17, 2008 as National Bike Week and encourage all citizens to participate in cycling activities including the Ride Your Bike to School Challenge May 12-16, Bike to Work Day on May 15, and the Family Bike Ride on May 17.
