PRESENTATION A

PROCLAMATION

“City Reads 2007”

WHEREAS, readers are leaders, and reading is the basis of all true education; and

WHEREAS, reading skills can fortify good education, and transcend mediocre education; and

WHEREAS, books are the highest form of literature, and the most effective way to preserve and pass on knowledge, custom, and tradition, communicate culture and teach essential life skills and philosophies, and are an account of dramatic human endeavor and historic achievement; and

WHEREAS, the City of Brentwood is a community that recognizes the importance of reading as an activity that offers information and entertainment for all its citizens; and

WHEREAS, reading is an activity that knits generations together, captures the collective imagination of children, parents and all members of the extended family, and effectively and efficiently bridges the generation gap; and

WHEREAS, reading encourages people to engage in discussions that examine the plot and characters as well as the stories and philosophies behind the content. These discussions prove that stories spark the imaginations of all ages, sexes, and cultural backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, the Brentwood Library and the citizens of the City of Brentwood support this joy of reading by encouraging adults to enthusiastically seek out The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama and share the concepts with family and friends.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the City Council of the City of Brentwood, do hereby proclaim September 17 through October 27, 2007 as City Read Weeks, and encourages all citizens to read The Samurai’s Garden, discuss its content, historic perspective and generally convey the joy of reading through their community.

Dated this 11th day of September 2007
