submitted by staff of the Engineering and Finance Departments requesting a
grant in the amount of $83,923.76 for a second phase of the Bicycle and
Pedestrian Safety Program. There were funds remaining in the original grant
of $138,275 awarded in 2005 for the first phase and staff received
permission to retain those funds and combine them with the award made this
year. The total of both grants for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program
is now $205,899.
The grant will provide funding to increase safety awareness among
pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists using education, enforcement and
engineering. The program will include overtime hours for Police and
Community Service Officer for bike patrol, education and enforcement and a
bicycle rodeo. It will also include educational material, awards and
incentives and bicycle helmets for students. A speed monitoring radar
trailer, hand-held radar guns, traffic signal monitoring equipment, and LED
