BACKGROUND: Every April the California Park & Recreation Society District III, which encompasses Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, hosts an Awards & Installation Banquet. This annual event recognizes the outgoing District III Board of Directors, the incoming District III Board of Directors as well as recognizing various agencies for outstanding facilities, programs, and community partners, along with Professional Service & Achievement Awards, and Outstanding Community Volunteers. Staff submitted an application for long time resident Rose Pierce for her many years of volunteer service to the Brentwood community and was pleased to learn of her winning the award for the April 5, 2006 Banquet. Unfortunately Rose passed away several days prior to the Banquet. Staff attended and received this prestigious award on behalf of Rose’s family.

At the August 22, 2006 City Council meeting Brentwood’s Poet Laureate, Diane Lando, will read “By Any Other Name”, a poem commissioned in memory of Rose Pierce. The Arts Commission accepted the poem on June 28, 2006. This is the first poem commissioned by Diane Lando, who was appointed by City Council to the two year post of Poet Laureate on March 14, 2006.
