CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 7

Meeting Date: February 28, 2006

Subject/Title: Adopt a Resolution authorizing staff to temporarily close and perform necessary repairs to Garin Parkway from just north of Mendota Street and Lawrence Lane to just north of Redhaven Street.

Prepared by: Engineering: M. Huber

Submitted by: Engineering: B. Grewal

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a Resolution authorizing staff to temporarily close and perform necessary repairs to Garin Parkway from just north of Mendota Street and Lawrence Lane to just north of Redhaven Street.

PREVIOUS ACTION
None.

BACKGROUND
The intersection at Garin Parkway and Mendota Street, and Lawrence Lane incurred damage last summer when a waterline was struck and damaged during the Fiber Optic Link installation between City Hall and the New Police Station. Staff and counsel are continuing discussions with the original contractor to seek payment for a portion of the cost to repair this intersection. Staff prepared an informal bid to repair the intersection, and no bids were received. Staff discussed the project with the contractors that did not bid the work, and found that the project was considered too small to fit into their already busy construction schedule.

Due to the lack of bids, the City can now perform the work with our own forces. The Public Works Department in conjunction with the Engineering Department will repair the intersection. If Council approves the temporary closure (five day maximum) the work can be done during the school break between March 13th and March 24th. The road would be able to be opened for use each day, in the late afternoon.

FISCAL IMPACT
Funding for this repair work is included within the approved 2005/2006 – 2009/2010 Capital Improvement Program Budget for the Fiber Optic Link, CIP Project No. 337-3712. Staff does not expect the repair costs to exceed $60,000, for labor, materials and equipment.
