Meeting Date: February 14, 2006
Subject/Title: Adopt a Resolution approving and authorizing the City Manager
to sign an agreement with Brentwood Union School District for Garin
Elementary School Lunchtime Activities Program
Prepared by: Tom Burt, Recreation Supervisor

Adopt a Resolution approving and authorizing the City Manager to sign an
agreement with Brentwood Union School District for Garin Elementary School
lunchtime activities program.
Recently staff was approached by Garin Elementary School’s Vice Principal,
Bart Schneider regarding a lunchtime activities program. The program would
be structured similarly to the lunchtime program at Edna Hill Middle School,
where recreation staff organize and supervise a variety of lunchtime
activities each day. The Garin program is viewed as a great “warm up” or
feeder system into the Edna Hill lunch program and the Police Activities
League After the Bell (P.A.L – ATB) program.
The structure and format of the program are as follows:
• The City of Brentwood would provide two recreation staff to work the
program and use the equipment we currently have.
• Recreation staff is responsible for the curriculum and the organization of
supplies and materials.
• The Lions Club has submitted a check to Garin School for $1,536.00 to
cover all of the costs of staffing and running the program.
• If the monies run out prior to the end of May, the program would end early
unless another donation is made.
• Currently, the funds from Lions Club are at the Brentwood Union School
District office. The City will bill the Brentwood Union School District for
the staffing costs.
• The lunchtime activities program would be offered during regular school
days, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Overall, this program is a win–win situation for Garin Elementary School and
the City of Brentwood Parks & Recreation Department. As the Garin students
move through the system and onto Edna Hill, this program will help to
enhance the success of the P.A.L. – ATB program at Edna Hill Middle School.
A budget adjustment is not necessary and all staffing costs will be
reimbursed through Brentwood Union School District, which has been sponsored
by the Lions Club.
