CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 6

Meeting Date: October 25, 2005

Subject/Title: Accept Annual Report on the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan

Prepared by: Craig D. Bronzan, Director of Parks and Recreation

Submitted by: Craig D. Bronzan, Director of Parks and Recreation

RECOMMENDATION
Accept the Annual Report on the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan.

PREVIOUS ACTION
City Council adopted the Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan and adopted the Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration on June 25, 2002.

City Council accepted the First Annual Report for the Parks, Trails and Recreation Master Plan on November 25, 2003, and the Second Annual Report on November 9, 2004.

BACKGROUND
One of the innovative parts of the City of Brentwood Parks, Trails, and Recreation Master Plan is the requirement that the plan is reviewed each year, with the submission of an annual report to City Council to evaluate the Parks and Recreation Department’s level of success in implementing the Master Plan. With the time and input that was required to complete the Master Plan, and the importance it plays in directing the future of parks and recreation in Brentwood, there was a strong desire to make sure the plan didn’t get approved and then sit on a shelf, never to be looked at again. The requirement of an annual report attempts to keep the plan up-to-date and current.

Parks and Recreation Department staff has compiled the third annual report for fiscal year 2004/2005 with the assistance and review by the Park and Recreation Commission on September 22, 2005. Once again, this report has been formatted to fit the City Council’s adopted mission and vision statement, five core values, and the “Brentwood Way” of doing business. This change of format has been well received by the Park and Recreation Commission and City Council and has added to the overall readability of the document.

FISCAL IMPACT
None
