CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 3

Meeting Date: July 12, 2005

Subject/Title: Two Appointments to Citizen’s Advisory Committee regarding
Community Facilities

Prepared by: Karen Chew, Assistant City Manager
Craig Bronzan, Director of Parks and Recreation

Submitted by: Donna Landeros, City Manager

RECOMMENDATION

Appoint Lanny Brown and Brianna Swisher to fill the two vacant positions on the Citizen’s Advisory Committee regarding Community Facilities representing the Park and Recreation Commission and Youth Commission, respectively.

BACKGROUND

On May 25, 2004 the City Council authorized staff to begin advertising and accepting applications from the community to serve on a newly created Citizen’s Advisory Committee to work with staff in determining the Community Facilities needs, priorities and opportunities.

On August 24, 2004 the City Council appointed nine members to the Citizen’s Advisory Committee regarding Community Facilities. These nine members represented a number of the active community groups in the City. The Committee was formed to make recommendations to the City Council on short and long term community facility opportunities for Brentwood. The Advisory Committee was charged with developing two phases of recommendations.

On May 24, 2005, the Committee presented their report on Phase I of their scope. This phase included an inventory of existing facilities and opportunities related to community facilities, visioning and assessment of current needs regarding types of facilities and services and the needs of Brentwood at General Plan build-out. This phase also included opportunities for collaboration with other providers/agencies and fiscally responsible consideration of costs and funding opportunities.

Ashley Clare, representing the Youth Commission, and Tom Jones, representing the Park and Recreation Commission, have both recently resigned from the Committee. The Youth Commission has recommended that Brianna Swisher be appointed to replace Ashley Clare. Tom Jones, Chair of the Park and Recreation Commission, has recommended Lanny Brown be appointed as their representative.
