Consider report and update from Contra Costa County as it relates to the
County Senior Nutrition Program (Co Co Café) in the Brentwood Community
On June 11, 2002, City Council authorized the City Manager to enter into an
agreement with Contra Costa County to provide a Senior Nutrition Program at
the Community Center.
On August 24, 2004, City Council approved a one-year grant to the County
program of $19,000 for the Café Manager position, to help the program
through the fiscal year 04/05.
As a result of City Council action on August 24, 2004, representatives of
the Contra Costa County Senior Nutrition Program were requested to return to
City Council in February 2005 to give an update on the program and outline
long-term funding strategies for the program. Contra Costa County’s Health
Services Department has been running a Senior Nutrition Congregate Program
called “Co Co Café” at the Brentwood Community Center since July 1, 2002.
The County Senior Nutrition Program is designed as a partnership between
cities and the County in providing nutrition services to senior citizen
residents in each community. Since opening, Co Co Café has served 6,547
seniors in fiscal year 2002/03 and 8,440 seniors in fiscal year 2003/04, and
3,800 to date for fiscal year 2004/05.
A. Paul Kraintz, Senior Nutrition Director with Contra Costa Health Services
will be in attendance at the Council Meeting to give a report and update as
per Council’s request (see attached materials).
Contra Costa Health Services request is as follows: $17,900 for 2005-06,
$18,300 for 2006-07, and continued in-kind use of the Brentwood Community
Center Blue Room for both fiscal years. Staff will include these requests as
a part of the 2005/07 General Operating Budget process for City Council
