CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 8

Meeting Date: October 12, 2004

Subject/Title: Contribution of $10,000 to 80 Volts in support of Liberty High School A Cappella Choir’s participation in the 2005 New York International Choral Festival in New York City

Submitted by: John Stevenson/Council Member Beckstrand

RECOMMENDATION
Approve a Resolution authorizing the contribution of $10,000 from the City Manager’s Contingency Fund to 80 Volts in support of Liberty High School A Cappella Choir’s participation in the 2005 New York International Choral Festival in New York City.

PREVIOUS ACTION
On November 12, 2002, City Council authorized the contribution of $10,000 from the City Manager’s contingency fund toward the Liberty High School A Cappella and Chamber Singers Choirs’ participation in the 2003 National Music Festival of the States.

BACKGROUND
The Liberty High School A Cappella and Chamber Singers Choirs were selected to represent the State of California at the National Music Festival of the States in Washington, D.C. Liberty’s performances were June 12-15. This was certainly a great honor for the school and for our Brentwood students.

The Liberty High School A Cappella Choir has been selected as one of only 8 high schools throughout the nation to participate in the prestigious New York International Choral Festival at the Lincoln Center in New York City. The reputation of Liberty High School’s choral program continues to gain national recognition under the leadership of choral director Susan Stuart. This is another exciting opportunity for our Brentwood students to expand their educational experience.

The cost of participating in such a prestigious event is beyond the normal fundraising capabilities of the high school students. $96,000 is the estimate for sending the 80-voice choir to New York for the 5-day event.

FISCAL IMPACT
Every year the City budgets for a City Manager’s Contingency fund in order to subsidize unforeseen items such as this. There are sufficient resources in this General Fund account to cover this expense, which has already been budgeted as a contingency.
