Proclamation


National Bicycling Month May 1 through May 31, 2004
 and “Bike to Work Day” in Brentwood


WHEREAS, the month of May 2004 has been proclaimed as “National Bicycling Month” and May 20, 2004, has been designated as “Bike to Work Day” throughout the United States by national bicycling organizations and state and local governments; and

WHEREAS, bicycling is a safe and efficient activity that can be used for recreation, fitness, commuting, shopping and errands in lieu of operating a motor vehicle, thereby preserving natural resources, reducing air pollution and getting healthful exercise; and

WHEREAS, recent federal legislation has required each state Department of Transportation to have a bicycle-pedestrian coordinator to help insure a proper place for bicycles in transportation planning; and

WHEREAS, the City of Brentwood was designated as a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists; and

WHEREAS, it is consistent with the City’s high level of environmental consciousness and concern to support and encourage the citizens of Brentwood to consider incorporating bicycling into their lifestyles and daily activities whenever possible.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brentwood, that the month of May 2004, is hereby recognized and proclaimed to be National Bicycling Month and May 20, 2004, to be Bike to Work Day in the City of Brentwood.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all citizens of the City of Brentwood are encouraged to consider bicycling as a fitness and recreation activity and especially as an alternate means of transportation that saves energy and reduces pollution and traffic congestion.
