City of Brentwood

WHEREAS, the City of Brentwood City Council is aware of 73 accidents in the last two years in the Contra Costa County segment of Vasco Road and between Memorial Day weekend of this year and August 11, 2002, seven people were killed; and

WHEREAS, the City of Brentwood has many of its residents facing an increased driving danger due to this segment of Vasco Road in Contra Costa County; and

WHEREAS, the City Council believes that Vasco Road requires safety improvements immediately; and

WHEREAS, while Vasco Road is outside the City’s jurisdiction, the City residents who travel Vasco Road are subject to increased risk of accidents than comparable segments of most roads in Contra Costa County; and

WHEREAS, Vasco Road will continue to be a major commute route upon which many Brentwood drivers and their passengers must travel for years to come; and

WHEREAS, the City Council supports the designation of this segment of Vasco Road as a safety corridor; and

WHEREAS, Brentwood and Discovery Bay residents, many of whom have lost loved ones due to the traffic accidents on Vasco Road, Senator Tom Torlakson, Assemblyman Guy Houston and Contra Cost County Supervisor Millie Greenberg have expended their time and energy to take action to support much needed safety improvements of Vasco Road; and

WHEREAS, the Brentwood City Council wants to acknowledge the combined efforts of Brentwood residents, such as Joanne Flynn, Jeff Altman, who lost his wife in an accident on Vasco Road, Concerned Residents About Vasco Experiences (“CRAVE”), our neighbors, state and federal representatives who all want to increase the awareness in the Brentwood community of their efforts to make Vasco Road a safer roadway.

NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Brentwood proclaims the week of October 19-25, 2003 as Vasco Road Safety Week.
