| CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 17 Meeting Date: March 11, 2003 Subject/Title: Approve a Resolution urging the Bypass Authority to rename Segments II and IIIA (Lone Tree Way to Marsh Creek Road) of the Highway 4 Bypass the “John Marsh Parkway” Submitted by: John Stevenson, City Manager RECOMMENDATION Approve a Resolution urging the Bypass Authority to rename Segments II and IIIA (Lone Tree Way to Marsh Creek Road) of the Highway 4 Bypass the “John Marsh Parkway” PREVIOUS ACTION None. BACKGROUND The City received the attached letter from the John Marsh Historic Trust dated January 30, 2003, asking the State Route 4 Bypass Authority to designate the section of the Bypass that passes through Brentwood from Lone Tree Way to Marsh Creek Road (Segments II and IIIA) as “John Marsh Parkway.” The State of California recently acquired 3,600 acres surrounding the Marsh Stone House. The Bypass will be the major route to the proposed John Marsh Home and Pioneer State Park. The role of the Bypass will surely expand as the Pioneer Park develops. This proposed name change to “John Marsh Parkway” will serve several purposes: commemorate a principal player in the California drive to statehood; direct visitors to the park; and emphasize the automotive throughway. Both the Board of Directors of the John Marsh Historic Trust and Friends of John Marsh endorse this name change. The City supports the Trust’s stance that John Marsh’s pioneer legacy and historic dwelling are indicative of the rich history of our area. The City also supports the name change and will send a letter with the attached Resolution urging the Bypass Authority to designate this section of the Bypass as the “John Marsh Parkway.” FISCAL IMPACT None.
