Subject/Title: Public Hearing for Public Ascertainment and Community Needs Assessment for Renewal of the Cable Television Franchise held by AT&T Broadband

Submitted by: D. Beougher/S. Gronlund

Approved by: John Stevenson, City Manager

No action required.

On March 12, 2002, the City Council held a public hearing for public ascertainment and community needs assessment related to the renewal of the cable television franchise held by AT&T Broadband.

At the previously stated public hearing, only residential users attended and voiced their concerns and complaints regarding their AT&T cable service. The purpose of this public hearing is to receive comments, suggestions and proposals from local organizations, as well as residential users, regarding the renewal of the AT&T cable franchise which serves Brentwood. Input from education, social, religious and other community-based organizations will assist the Council in determining the renewal of the AT&T cable franchise. In particular, the Council would like to have feedback for the so-called “public, education and governmental (PEG) access channels” which are mandated by federal law. AT&T’s cable franchise shall make such PEG channels available for use by these types of local organizations.

This hearing is held pursuant to the requirements of federal law regarding the procedures for determining whether to renew the current AT&T cable franchise, 47 U.S. C sec. 546 (a) (1) (Supp.IV 1992).
