CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 21

Meeting Date: April 23, 2002

Subject/Title: Establishment of Employee Tuition Reimbursement Program

Submitted by: J. Stevenson/P. Standley

Approved by: John Stevenson, City Manager

RECOMMENDATION
Approve a Resolution adopting a City Employee Tuition Reimbursement Policy and Procedure.

PREVIOUS ACTION
None.

BACKGROUND
Previously, the City has budgeted department by department for tuition reimbursement, with the result being no uniformity between departments. This policy sets a reasonable maximum reimbursement per year, a maximum number of employees eligible and sets reasonable parameters that guarantee benefits to the City. This program would benefit the City by providing educational opportunities to our employees.

Staff has met and conferred in good faith with employee bargaining unit representatives with regard to policy development.

FISCAL IMPACT
The probable cost will be $40,000 to $50,000 in fiscal year 2002/2003.
