Passage of a resolution authorizing the submittal of an application for grant funds to the California Office of Traffic Safety for a DUI Enhanced Enforcement Program
Grant funding is available from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Safety Act and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) for projects designed to address traffic safety priority areas. These include police traffic services, alcohol and other drugs, occupant protection, pedestrian and bicycle safety, emergency medical services, and traffic records and roadway safety. Grants may be for assistance in mitigating traffic safety program deficiencies, expansion of an ongoing activity, or development of a new program.
The Police Department proposes to submit an application requesting funding to aid in the enforcement of alcohol and drug related offenses, specifically for a DUI Enhanced Enforcement Program. This program will include specialized community enforcement, education and public information and youth programs. The 24-month project goals include reduction in the number of alcohol-related injury and fatal collisions as well as the reduction in the involvement of habitual DUI offenders.
The grant proposal will request $217,470 from this program. There is no required match for the program; however, staff time will count as an in-kind match, for example; the supplemental personnel staffing DUI checkpoints would be funded by the Police Department.
