CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. C

Contra Costa Community College District
Ballot Measure “Measure A” – March 5, 2002

Background: For over 50 years, Contra Costa Community College District has been providing students of all ages with top quality affordable educational opportunities. Through colleges such as Los Medanos College and occupational training centers such as the Delta Science Center and LMC Brentwood Center, the College district prepares students to continue studies at 4-year colleges and universities, offers occupational certification for entry in a wide variety of jobs, provides opportunities for working adults to advance their careers, and allows older adults to pursue educational fulfillment.

Los Medanos College continues to seek all available outside sources of funding, including grants and matching funds, but outside sources will not be enough to finance the work that needs to be done.

Most classrooms and laboratories are over 25 years old. LMC now serves approximately 10,000 students each semester.

In order to serve the Student’s needs at LMC, a new Library and Science/Math Building must be built. The Delta Science Center, located in Oakley, needs science classrooms and labs and the new Brentwood Center needs to upgrade technology to stay current with training and education needs. Classrooms, science labs, restrooms, and other buildings and facilities must be repaired, wired for 21st century technology, upgraded and modernized.
