Subject/Title: Downtown Parking Improvements

Submitted by: Engineering: J. Stevenson/ Sam Peiris

Approved by: Jon Elam, City Manager

Approve the restriping of street parking as recommended by the City Engineer to increase the total number of parking stalls downtown by 17, and direct staff to continue working with the Downtown Parking Task Force to look for opportunities to increase parking in the downtown area.

On May 9, 2000 the City Council directed staff to analyze parking on downtown area.

The City Council has had discussions previously regarding inadequate downtown parking for quite some time. There never seems to be enough. After analyzing and walking the downtown area, staff discovered several opportunities for increasing parking availability in the downtown area. The attached Exhibit depicts increasing parking in the downtown area by 17 spaces.

At present, staff and the Downtown Task Force are exploring the possibility to installing a parking structure/retail center on the west side of Second Street between Oak Street and Maple Street. Until these studies are finalized, staff will hold off on Second Street construction improvements.

The total cost of the improvement is estimated to be $12,100.00. Restriping costs will be funded through the General Fund. City staff will perform all of these works.
