CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 11

Meeting Date: March 27, 2001

Subject/Title: Central Boulevard/Griffith Lane Signalization

Submitted by: Engineering: J. Stevenson/S. Peiris

Approved by: Jon Elam, City Manager

RECOMMENDATION
Authorize the City Manager to purchase long lead time traffic signal equipment in the amount not to exceed $75,000 for the Central Boulevard/Griffith Lane Signal, CIP Project No. 336-3057, and amend the CIP budget to reflect expenditures to be made during this fiscal year.

PREVIOUS ACTION
This project is included in the five year Capital Improvement Program as adopted by Council on May 23, 2000.

BACKGROUND
Over the last year, the traffic volume at this intersection has increased significantly and staff has been directed to install this signal to provide a smoother, safer traffic movement for commuters and school children during peak hours. Staff is designing the project in-house by preparing the technical specifications and contract documents to initiate the construction bidding process in early April. In order to minimize delays, staff is asking that Council authorize funding to purchase long lead items for this project. Some of these items include the controller cabinet and poles. It is essential to order these items in advance due to supplier backlog and required testing.

Funding for this project is from facility fees. Staff is requesting that the budget be amended to show expenditures that will be made this current fiscal year, rather than in the originally projected 04/05 fiscal year.
