CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 28

Meeting Date: September 12, 2000

Subject/Title: Downtown Historic Preservation Plan

Submitted by: Jon Elam

Approved by: Jon Elam

RECOMMENDATION
Request the Neighborhood Committee to study the development of a historic preservation plan for downtown.

PREVIOUS ACTION
The City Council discussed this item briefly at the August 22, 2000 meeting.

BACKGROUND
Many cities have adopted downtown historic preservation ordinances and plans. These plans usually evolve from a study or plan that is prepared by a consultant or planning team. The Community Development Department has planned, once the General Plan amendment is completed, to undertake a comprehensive downtown development plan.

If the City Council wants to accelerate this work, having the Neighborhood Committee study various approaches used might be a good first step. The biggest step is to identify who could provide the staff support for that effort at this time.
