of the City.
Council has continually expressed interest in improving the quality of
life for our residents and encouraged downtown commercial use. To that
end, the members of the Downtown Parking Task Force have requested that
staff research the possibility of having PG&E install streetlights
on existing utility poles in the downtown area that do not have lighting.
The intent is to encourage the public to use available alleyway
parking areas that will be made safer by additional lighting.
Staff has completed the second phase of that effort and a preliminary
request has been forwarded to PG&E for the installation of approximately
13 streetlights on existing utility poles.
policy regarding this program is that they will furnish and install the
lights at no charge and bill the City on a monthly basis for the energy
utilized. Previous lights
installed have included shielding to ensure that the lights illuminate
the street and not residents’ windows.
The estimated cost of shielding is approximately $150 per light.
This phase of light installation is primarily in commercial areas
and will not require shielding.
The cost of power for the lights on a monthly basis will be approximately
$10 per month per light, depending on the wattage of the light, or $1,560
