COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 14
for Additional Staff in Parks and Recreation Department
D. Bronzan, Director of Parks and Recreation
Jon Elam, City
request for additional staff in the Parks and Recreation Department for
budget year 2000/01.
will make a presentation
to the City Council Personnel Sub-committee on Friday, April 21, 2000,
and will bring a recommendation forward for City Council action at the
April 25, 2000 City Council meeting.
Parks and Recreation Department is moving forward with a city-wide maintenance
contract for parks, roadways and Lighting and Landscape Districts and
is preparing for the opening of the new Aquatic Complex. Additionally, the department now staffs three commissions (Park
and Recreation, Youth, and Arts) and has greatly added programs for the
community. July 1, 2000 will
be crunch time when all of the additional responsibilities go into effect.
Our normal procedure would be to include additional positions as
a part of the normal budget adoption process.
However, this would delay the actual filling of new positions until
September at best, well after our need has occurred.
In working with finance and personnel, our proposal can fill these positions while working within existing budgets. Approval will allow us to start the recruitment process so that staff is available July 1, 2000, when the service level requires additional staff and the expenditures will be incurred in the 2000/01 adopted budgets.
