CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM NO. 18

Meeting Date:     March 28, 2000

Subject/Title:      Consideration of a resolution adding a condition to all single-family tentative subdivision maps to require pre-wiring for electric vehicle charging facilities.

Submitted by:     Community Development (Oshinsky/Kidwell)

Approved by:      Jon Elam, City Manager

RECOMMENDATION

Adopt the proposed resolution adding a condition to all single-family tentative subdivision maps to require pre-wiring for electric vehicle charging.

 PREVIOUS ACTION

At the City Council Meeting of July 27, 1999 Council directed staff implement an approach to require all new single-family homes to be built with facilities for electric vehicle recharging.

 BACKGROUND

After discussions with PG&E and the development community, the most economical method was determined to be pre-wiring, originating at the main service.  There is a second meter setup that is adaptable to existing services that is designed for electric vehicle charging.  With the appropriate wiring originating in the main service and terminating in an appropriate location in the garage, the out of pocket cost to the contractor is in the range of $75.00 to $200.00.

 RESOLUTION NO.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BRENTWOOD ADDING A CONDITION TO ALL TENITIVE SUBDIVISION MAPS FOR NEW SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT TO REQUIRE PREWIRING FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING FACILITIES

WHEREAS, electric energy is a clean and efficient energy source; and

WHEREAS, the development of electric vehicles has progressed to a point that they have proven to be reliable source of transportation; and

WHEREAS, electric powered vehicles operate at a fuel cost of 40% less per mile than conventional gasoline vehicles; and

WHEREAS, the general Plan of the City of Brentwood has established a goal to create an environment wherein energy resources are efficiently utilized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Brentwood adds the following condition to all residential tentative maps:

All new single-family residential units shell be pre wired to the satisfaction of the City Building Official to accommodate electric vehicle charging facilities.
