City Manager

Authorization to apply for

Great Valley Center Grant

PREVIOUS ACTIONS:

On May 25, 1999, the City Council authorized an agreement for contract services with MIG, Inc for consulting services to help formulate a City Agricultural Enterprise Program.  On July 27, 1999, the Council appointed a nineteen-person advisory committee to provide Agricultural Enterprise Program policy recommendations. On September 28, 1999 the Council authorized staff to apply for State Agricultural Land Stewardship Planning Grant Funds to assist with development of  a program to protect high quality agricultural land and strengthen the local agricultural industry.

RECOMMENDED COUNCIL ACTION:

Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to submit an application to the Great Valley Center for 2000 LEGACI Grant funds.

COMMENTS:

The Great Valley Center is a non-profit corporation created to support activities and organizations that promote the economic, social, and environmental well being of California’s Central Valley. Due to Brentwood’s proximity to the Central Valley, the Great Valley Center has determined that the City is eligible to apply for LEGACI Grant funds.

LEGACI Grants support projects and programs in the areas of Land Use, Economic Development, Growth, Agriculture, Conservation and Investment.  The goal of the LEGACI grant program is to facilitate the development of sound public policy, create a healthy, sustainable Central Valley and to provide support for its residents, its economy and its natural resources. The City is seeking funds to assist with the planning development of the Agricultural Enterprise Program.

Staff has prepared an application for LEGACI Grant funding to assist with the planning development of a program to protect high quality agricultural land and strengthen the local agricultural industry.

Planning for the program will be a joint effort involving local agricultural stakeholders, the City of Brentwood, Contra Costa County, and community residents.
