SCHEDULED MATTERS
3. ACTION ITEM: Report from the Fundraising Committee on the upcoming fundraiser and approve a final date. (J. Strauss)

Chair J. Strauss advised that the committee has selected April 20, 2012 as the date for the middle school dance fundraiser and he has designed a flyer. The theme is Tie Dye. Areas of responsibility are designated as Commissioner A. Strauss for the glow sticks that will be the giveaway item; Commissioner Marquez for school announcements; Commissioner Montes for the music play list; and Commissioner Z. Strauss for decorations.

After much discussion regarding concessions for the dance, it was decided to offer sodas, water, candy and to secure Jamba Juice to sell smoothies on site.

City Staff Liaison Gary advised that the police explorers unit is not available to assist with security. As such, each commissioner is asked to bring an adult chaperone.

Attendance will be limited to 250 and wristbands will be placed on attendees to show they have provided a school identification card and paid for entry.

Motion to approve the date of April 20, 2012 for the middle school dance fundraiser.
Moved by Marquez; seconded by Ross.

4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the School Outreach Committee regarding visiting local middle schools to increase middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (M. Marquez)

Commissioner Marquez advised that she received a response from Adams Middle School and the Youth Commission is approved to visit any day within the next two weeks to do their presentation. She has not received a response from Edna Hill Middle School but she will continue her efforts. The committee members will visit the schools, distribute flyers for the dance and discuss the youth commission application.

5. ACTION ITEM: Determine commissioners’ interest in volunteering at the Brentwood Police Activities League’s Tigers Challenge, scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012. (J. Strauss)

Chair J. Strauss advised that he hasn’t heard any further details about the event. He missed the last PAL meeting as he was out of town. He’s unsure if the Youth Commission will receive any portion of the event proceeds for its scholarship fund.

Discussion followed concerning the commissioners’ interest and availability to assist at the event. Based on minimal availability of those youth commissioners present, and considering four commissioners were absent, the general consensus was to not commit the Youth Commission to the event.

Motion to not commit the Youth Commission to volunteer at the Brentwood Police Activities League’s Tigers Challenge, scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012.
Moved by Wallace; seconded by Montes.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Wallace reported on several upcoming events at Adams Middle School. She also commented on the history timeline around the Civic Center and perhaps the Youth Commission can mark an event to be included in the timeline. City Staff Liaison Gary recommended that she present an idea for the history walk to the City Council.

City Staff Liaison Gary reminded the commissioners about the Civic Center Grand Opening scheduled for Saturday, May 19, 2012. There will be food, music, tours and the new city park water feature will be operating.

Chair J. Strauss asked the commissioners to keep the dance in the forefront of their minds as the date will approach quickly. He reminded commissioners to get their chaperones confirmed.

Commissioner Wallace wants to bring more kids to the Civic Center to help keep the area vibrant with activity.

Adult Advisor Kraeber reminded the commission about the Teen Town Hall idea that was presented at the YAC Attack conference in March and perhaps it can be included on a future agenda.

STAFF COMMENTS
