3. ACTION ITEM: Report from the Fundraising Committee and if applicable, approve a new date, time, entry fee and location for the next fundraiser. (J. Strauss)

Chair J. Strauss advised that he has communicated with Harvest Park Bowl (HPB). Fundraisers are usually done on weekdays/weeknights before a non-school day. The baseline price for a weeknight is $10 per person. The baseline for a Friday or Saturday is $15 per person. The baseline is the amount owed to HPB. The organization hosting the event retains the amount over the baseline.

Chair J. Strauss looked at the school calendar the next holiday is April 6, which is Easter weekend. The general consensus of the Youth Commission is that Easter weekend is not desirable due to church and family commitments.

It was discussed to host an alternate fundraiser, such as a middle school dance, during the remainder of the current school year and host a bowling event next school year. City Staff Liaison Gary advised that the Brentwood Community Center is available on Fridays, April 13, 20 and 27, 2012. April 13 was eliminated due to an event at Adams Middle School. The Fundraising Committee will inquire with school calendars to determine if any conflicts exist for April 20 and 27. Commissioner Wallace will contact Adams Middle School; Chair J. Strauss will contact Bristow Middle School; and Commissioner Montes will contact Edna Hill Middle School.

A theme was discussed and decided upon a Tie Dye theme with ticket fees of $7 presale and $10 at the door. The event hours would be 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Motion to host a middle school dance fundraiser with a Tie Dye theme on April 20, 2012, with an alternate date of April 27, 2012, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Brentwood Community Center with tickets fees of $7 presale and $10 at the door.

4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the School Outreach Committee regarding visiting local middle schools to increase middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (M. Marquez)

Chair Marquez advised that she visited Bristow Middle School last week. She delivered twenty Youth Commission applications and made a presentation to the leadership class about the Youth Commission. The majority of the class was familiar with the Youth Commission and/or has attended a dance hosted by the Youth Commission. She will follow-up with Edna Hill and Adams middle schools after spring break. The School Outreach Committee will also follow-up with the schools to have announcements made on behalf of the Youth Commission.

City Staff Liaison Gary has sent Youth Commission applications to the middle schools. She will compose a brief script to be used for the school announcements.

5. DISCUSSION ITEM: Report from commissioners who attended the YAC Attack Conference for Bay Area Youth Commissions on March 3, 2012 in Santa Clara. (A. Strauss)

Commissioner A. Strauss stated that the YAC Attack Conference on March 3, 2012 was well-attended by City of Brentwood Youth Commissioners and advisors. She felt that the event was good but had hoped it would’ve included more information to bring back to one’s own commission. She enjoyed the opportunity to network with other youth commissions. She was pleased with the presentation that was hosted by the City of Brentwood Youth Commission.

Other commissioners and advisors felt the event was more oriented towards personal growth instead of business topics; learned about another commission that received a grant and sponsored a Stay Fit and Play a Bit after school program; learned about other commissions that helped to build a teen center; enjoyed seeing vendors demonstrate games and a photo booth; congratulated our commissioners on a well-done presentation with great interaction with the attendees; and learned about a Teen Town Hall event that invites teens to provide feedback on various topics.

Commissioner Ross inquired about whether there will be a Tour de Starbucks event this year. There hasn’t been any information about an event being coordinated for this year. Last year’s event was not successful.

Chair J. Strauss announced that the Police Activities League is planning a karate tournament on April 28, 2012 at Liberty High School. They will be looking for volunteer assistance from the Youth Commission.

Police Liaison Peart felt that attendance at the YAC Attack was a good opportunity to evaluate our own commission’s activities.

City Staff Liaison Gary informed the commissioners of the Civic Center Grand Opening scheduled for May 19, 2012.
