Commissioner A. Strauss discussed advertising for the Teen Town Hall. The newspaper ran an article; posters and flyers are ready for the school sites; a smaller version of the flyer will go home with middle school students after Spring Break; additional flyers will be given to high school teachers; school announcements; community bulletin boards; and all commissioners were asked to promote it. She also distributed a draft of the survey questions and presented ideas for the discussion questions.
She stressed the importance of all commissioners to attend the event as everyone will have an active role that evening. A rehearsal is planned preceding the April Youth Commission meeting.
4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss volunteering at the Brentwood Police Explorers Competition on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Heritage High School. (C. Peart)
Police Liaison Peart extended an opportunity to the Youth Commission to volunteer at the Brentwood Police Explorers Competition on April 27, 2013. The event expects to have 150 – 200 explorers with up to 400 total police personnel. Volunteers are needed for scenario roll playing, score sheet delivery, food service and various other tasks. A minimum donation of $500 is guaranteed to the Youth Commission Scholarship Fund in exchange for their volunteer service. If the Youth Commission volunteers for the event, a firm commitment to follow through would be required. Youth Commissioners need to state their interest by the April meeting.
5. ACTION ITEM: Determine interest in offering the proposed fundraiser at Harvest Park Bowl on either April 26 or April 27, 2013. (J. Strauss)
Chairperson J. Strauss discussed both the Rock N Bowl and Brentwood Police Explorers Competition fundraisers with City Staff Liaison Gary. They feel the Brentwood Police Explorers Competition is better use of their time for a fundraising event. He proposes not hosting the Rock N Bowl event at this time and proceed with Brentwood Police Explorers Competition.
Commissioner A. Strauss recommended that the Youth Commission host another event to keep the commission visible and involved in the community.
Motion to end the Youth Commission interest in hosting a Rock N Bowl fundraiser scheduled for April 26 or 27, 2013.
Moved by A. Strauss; seconded by Spears.
6. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the School Outreach Committee regarding visiting local middle schools to increase middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (G. Olveda)
Commissioner Olveda has attempted to contact the middle schools by phone and email. He’s received some response from Bristow and Edna Hill but has been unsuccessful with Adams. Commissioner Cushing made contact with a teacher at Adams and confirmed availability for a classroom visit. Commissioner Olveda will contact committee members to schedule the Adams visit. Commissioner Olveda will go to Edna Hill and Commissioners Marquez and Spears will visit Bristow.
Chairperson J. Strauss encouraged the visits to take place before Spring Break to allow students an opportunity to submit Youth Commission applications prior to the deadline.
