City Staff Liaison Gary will get approvals from school districts for flyer distribution. Commissioner A. Strauss is working on survey questions. She will provide to City Staff Liaison Gary a list of supplies, decorations, food and beverages needed for the event. The Youth Commission requested a rehearsal prior to the regular April Youth Commission meeting.

5. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the School Outreach Committee regarding visiting local middle schools to increase middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (G. Olveda)
City Staff Liaison Gary provided an update in Commissioner Olveda’s absence. Commissioner Olveda has emailed each school. He’s contacted Bristow Middle School; Edna Hill indicated that he couldn’t set-up meetings directly with classes and that he would need to go through the principal or vice-principal; and he hasn’t heard back from Adams Middle School. He’s brainstorming ideas for a flyer. Once school visits are scheduled, he’ll make arrangements for staff to make copies of the flyer.
Commissioner Marquez will email the committee with suggestions to help the process. City Staff Liaison Gary is willing to help and email the schools and teachers, if needed.
She is also following up on the donation from volunteering at the 2012 Blues, Brews and BBQ’s.
The Youth Commission application period is open. Applications will be available online and they will also be provided to the schools. She stated that if a youth commissioner’s term is expiring, they are welcome to reapply and they will follow the same application process. They must submit an application and interview again.
She invited the commissioners to provide ideas if there are any speakers that they would like to have present at a Youth Commission meeting. She offered assistance in arranging presentations.
