CALL TO ORDER
Vice Chairperson Z. Strauss called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

CONSENT CALENDAR
1. Approve regular meeting minutes of September 5, 2012. (J. Strauss)
2. Accept Fiscal Status for 2012/13 budget year. (A. Spears)

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Fundraising Committee for the November 9, 2012 fundraiser dance. (J. Strauss)

4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update on the BMX Competition at the Brentwood Skate/BMX Park to be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012. (J. Strauss)

5. DISCUSSION ITEM: Recap from the Commissioners in attendance at the Liberty and Heritage Homecoming Parades. (A. Spears/A. Strauss)

Commissioner A. Strauss advised that the Youth Commission participated in both homecoming parades. Commissioners A. Strauss, Spears, Z. Strauss and Cushing rode in the Liberty parade. Commissioners Montes and Conder rode in the Heritage parade. City Staff Liaison Barry will send a thank you card to Mrs. Spears for driving in the Liberty parade.

6. DISCUSSION ITEM: Evaluate the Youth Commission Social held this evening at 6 p.m. (M. Marquez)

Commissioner Marquez advised that the attendance was less than desired. It was discussed to consider holding the event during a different time of year or hosting it in a different manner.

7. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update on the Hometown Halloween event to be held on October 27, 2012. (S. Barry)

Acting City Staff Liaison Barry advised that she has requested a check for the booth space. Once it’s prepared, she’ll deliver it to the Chamber of Commerce. She asked the volunteers to arrive forty-five minutes to one hour early to help set-up and then, work the event. The giveaway item is a personalized flying disc.

8. ACTION ITEM: Accept the Alternate Commissioner and recommend their approval by City Council. (S. Barry)

City Staff Liaison Barry advised that she has communicated, via email, with Jordyn Foley, and she is excited to join the Youth Commission. Jordyn is invited to attend meetings and events as a spectator until such time that she is approved by City Council.

Motion to accept the first alternate, Jordyn Foley, as a Brentwood Youth Commissioner and recommend her approval by City Council.

9. ACTION ITEM: Update from the Teen Town Hall Committee regarding the “Let Your Voice Be Heard” teen forum scheduled for Thursday, October 25, 2012 and determine a budget. (A. Strauss)

Commissioner A. Strauss advised that Adult Advisor Popoola suggested doing a survey at the event. A budget of $300 was discussed for pizza at the event. Acting City Staff Liaison Barry stressed the importance of heavily advertising and promoting the event at the schools.

7:19 p.m. Chairperson J. Strauss arrived.

Motion to approve a $300 budget for supplies and food for the Teen Town Hall on October 25, 2012.

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Fundraising Committee for the November 9, 2012 fundraiser dance. (J. Strauss)

Chair J. Strauss advised that a new theme has been selected. The theme will be “Clash of the Colors” and encourages attendees to wear their school spirit colors. Ideas were discussed for a giveaway item of sunglasses; snack and refreshment items; decorations of streamers and balloons; canned food drive; and an advertising plan. Commissioner Montes will deliver posters to Edna Hill; Commissioner Marquez will deliver to Bristow and Commissioner Cushing will deliver to Adams.

4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update on the BMX Competition at the Brentwood Skate/BMX Park to be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012. (J. Strauss)

Chair J. Strauss advised that the Youth Commission is committed to assisting with the BMX event and needs to have a good turn-out of volunteers as there are many duties that they manage. Individuals that are available to volunteer for the entire event are Commissioners Conder, Z. Strauss and Montes. Individuals that are available to assist with a portion of the event are Commissioners Marquez, J. Strauss, Spears, A. Strauss, Adult Advisor Popoola and possibly Commissioner Olveda. Acting City Staff Liaison Barry impressed upon them that a firm commitment is required.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner A. Strauss thanked Acting City Staff Liaison Barry for filling-in during Barbie’s leave of absence. Her hard work was appreciated and she did a great job. Chair J. Strauss advised that he will keep everyone updated regarding the BMX Competition. He’ll send the final flyer to Barbie for her review.

STAFF COMMENTS
Acting City Staff Liaison Barry thanked the Youth Commission for assisting her while she served as the interim staff liaison. She reminded the commissioners to confirm adult chaperones for the Clash of Colors dance.
