6. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Youth Leadership Conference Committee regarding the proposed Brentwood Youth Leadership Conference. (P. Ross)

Commissioner Ross advised that the committee has not developed a purpose or theme. The commission brainstormed event ideas to assist the committee.

Commissioner Walker presented the ideas discussed by the previous committee members. One theme is to “LEAD with Great HOPE.” The acronym for LEAD is Learn, Educate, Appreciate, Develop and HOPE stands for Helping Others Pursue Excellence. The other theme is “5 Steps to Leadership.”

It was discussed contacting Marilyn King, former Olympian, as a possible keynote speaker. The event would be open to the public with pre-registration required. The fee for attendees remains to be determined based on speaker and other event expenses. Possible topics for breakout sessions include communication, helping others, getting others involved, advertising and promoting, idea development and ethics. The venue has not been reserved for the possible event dates of August 20 or 27, 2011.
