SCHEDULED MATTERS
4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Middle School Activity Night subcommittee regarding the planning of the movie night for middle school students. (M. Strauss)

Chair Strauss advised that the middle school movie night event has been placed on hold pending the decisions of the City Council at their January 13, 2009 meeting.

7:07 p.m. Commissioner Escobar arrived

5. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Youth Commission Master Plan Subcommittee regarding the Youth Survey. (D. Castle)

Adult Advisor Castle advised that the subcommittee has not met since prior to the December 2008 Youth Commission Meeting. Distribution is targeted for early February. City Staff Liaison Gary requested that the distribution is completed by February 15, 2009. In the high schools, surveys will be distributed to the Leadership Classes and one class of the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades.

Chair Strauss is in charge of coordinating the project with Heritage High School and Adams Middle School. He has a meeting scheduled next week with Principal Parsons at Heritage High School. He has also met with one of the vice principals at Adams Middle School. He was given a list of teachers to meet with and plans to find one day that all are available to do the survey.

Commissioner Cook has a meeting scheduled tomorrow with Principal Halloran at Liberty High School.

Commissioner Hamblin is working with Bristow Middle School and is awaiting a return call. City Staff Liaison Gary has met with an administrator from the school and was informed that they are interested in distributing the survey by their teachers during home room. City Staff Liaison Gary is fine with that approach but advised the commissioners to keep in mind they will lose the opportunity to share the purpose of the Youth Commission if they aren’t the ones distributing the survey.

Commissioner Boer is in charge of Edna Hill Middle School and advised he needs to meet with Principal Jobb.

6. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update from the Middle School Involvement Subcommittee regarding visiting local middle schools to increase middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (A. Boer)

Commissioner Boer advised that the subcommittee has not met since the December meeting and there are no new details to report.

Discussion pertained to combining the visits of the Middle School Involvement Subcommittee with the Master Plan Subcommittee survey distribution. The outcome of the discussion was to keep the visits separate so that each topic receives undivided attention and increases the visibility of the Youth Commission at the schools.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS

Commissioner Cook advised that the Executive Committee has met and revised the Youth Commissioner and Youth Scholarship Applications.

Commissioner Montes inquired about the ribbon cutting at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center. City Staff Liaison Gary welcomed their attendance but stated it is not required. The ribbon cutting is scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on January 9, 2009. There will be tours of the facility.

Chair Strauss advised that the Police Activities League will be going through changes due to recent budget reshaping. He also advised the dates of the Sacramento Experience are April 19 – 22, 2009. He asked the commissioners to advertise, by word of mouth, that the Youth Commission scholarships are available to high school seniors.
