Youth Commission Minutes - April 2, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m.

Commissioners Nick Castle, Matthew Strauss, Christine Mendez, Belinda Ordaz, Leah Hocking, Chris Walker, and Lauren Conder were present. Commissioners Mickell Escobar, Sarah Simmons and C.C. Ahluwalia were absent. Adult Advisors James Martinez, Dave Castle and Julie Truesdell were present. Police Liaison Matt Bell was present. City Staff Liaison Barbie Gary was present.



There were no changes to the agenda.

Mr. Leonard Roudman with the Brentwood Library presented a community service opportunity to the Youth Commission. On May 3, 2008, the library will be hosting the “Día de Los Niños, Día de Los Libros” (Day of the Child, Day of the Book) and he is recruiting volunteers. The event will take place in the Brentwood Community Center.

Commissioner Strauss pulled Consent Item #3: Accept monthly status report to inquire if any applications have been received for the Youth Commission openings. City Staff Liaison Gary advised that one (1) application has been received. She further advised that two (2) applications have been received for the Youth Commission Scholarship. The executive team will meet to select scholarship recipients.

Commissioner Strauss made a motion to approve the consent calendar. Commissioner Castle seconds. All were in favor.

• DISCUSSION ITEM Discuss next steps for increasing middle school student involvement with the Youth Commission. (N. Castle)
Commissioner Castle advised that commissioners have visited Adams and Bristow Leadership Programs. They received favorable responses. The commissioners recommend doing these visits several times per year.

• DISCUSSION ITEM Discuss status of the Battle of the Bands competition scheduled for Friday, April 18, 2008 and Youth Commissioner involvement. (L. Conder)
Commissioner Conder advised that no applications have been received for the competition. City Staff Liaison Gary advised that one application was received after the staff report was submitted. A minimum of three (3) bands is required in order for the event to go forward. City Staff Liaison Gary will email the commissioners with a status on Friday.

• DISCUSSION ITEM Review and discuss updated draft of the Youth Survey. (B. Ordaz)
Commissioner Ordaz advised that the subcommittee has met and further refined the survey. Suggestions were offered for improvement. The subcommittee will meet to discuss distribution method and timeline. City Staff Liaison Gary will research if the survey needs City Council approval before being distributed.

7:31 p.m. Commissioner Mendez departed.

• DISCUSSION ITEM Discuss details for the Spring to Life Fun Run fundraiser for the Youth Commission Scholarship Fund (C.C. Ahluwalia)
As Commissioner Ahluwalia was not present, Commissioner Strauss advised that volunteers are needed at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2008 to assist with the event. The event has been a fundraiser for the Youth Commission in past years. The Youth Commission has received donations for its scholarship fund based on the number of volunteers they recruit for the event. It was recommended that they wear their Youth Commission shirts.

• DISCUSSION ITEM Update from the Tour de Starbucks subcommittee regarding event planning. (C. Walker)
Commissioner Walker advised that the subcommittee has met and discussed changing the route names to “Short, Tall and Venti” based on the length of the rides thus aligning the event with the size of Starbuck’s beverages. The subcommittee recommends doing the poker run as in past years and eliminating the raffle tickets. Other items discussed included offering beverage samples at the restaurants to provide refreshments to the riders; staggering the start times so riders return closer together; and Police Liaison Bell was asked to drive the new Venti course to determine if any hazards or obstacles exist.

Commissioner Hocking advised of a new community based web site. The public can access it at

City Staff Liaison Gary advised that waivers are required to volunteer at the Spring to Life Fun Run. Waivers were distributed.
