February 28, 2013 at 7 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER: Chair Madden called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Present were Chair Bruce Mulder; Vice-Chair Sandra Myers and Commissioners Eileen Hofstadt and Alyssa Madden. Commissioner Blythe Lind was excused absent. Staff members present were: Roger Stromgren, Park/Maintenance Manager; Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager; and Linda Stadlbauer, Administrative Assistant II.

PRESENTATION(S): Presentation from NSP3, aka Custom Canopies Inc.


1. Approve minutes of regular meeting of January 24, 2013.
2. Accept Recreation Division Quarterly Report and Recreation Manager project status quarterly report. (P. Scherff)

1. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discussion on types and locations of shade to be used in the various park locations. (R. Stromgren)

Discussion included the park locations and amenities that would be covered. Priority is:
#1 - Sunset Park: baseball and soccer bleachers (2 at the competitive field)
#2 - Blue Goose Park: by 2-5 yr. old play area, benches around water area
(Add 4 more benches and then group by twos); picnic tables; spring toys
#3 - Veterans Park: pirate ship
#4 - Oak Meadow Park: bleachers
#5 - Balfour Guthrie Park: bleacher only the 24 x 10 x 14

2. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discussion on the QR F.I.T. Trail System and possible use in one of the City parks or trails. (R. Stromgren)

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss a request from City Council for the Commission to consider and make a recommendation back to City Council regarding the return of a gazebo to City Park. (R. Stromgren)

4. VERBAL UPDATE: General Plan Workshop Group verbal update. (E. Hofstadt)

Commissioner Hofstadt advised the Commission that the meeting is March 21, 2013.

Poldina Scherff updated the Commission regarding the Youth in Government program. She also informed them that the East Contra Costa Historical Society is meeting in the Community Center and that Lunch with Bunny is on March 23rd in the Community Center.

Roger Stromgren presented a slide show on the Universal Abilities Playground and on the new bocce courts which will have a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 14th at 8:30 a.m.

Commissioner Madden commented that the art show is very well attended.
Chair Mulder congratulated staff on the Universal Abilities Playground and the new bocce courts at Veterans Park.
