Meeting Minutes

CALL TO ORDER: Vice-Chair Mulder called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Present were Vice-Chair Bruce Mulder and Commissioners Blythe Lind and Sandra Myers. Chair Alyssa Madden and Commissioner Eileen Hofstadt were excused absent. Staff members present were: Roger Stromgren, Park/Maintenance Manager; Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, and Linda Stadlbauer, Administrative Assistant II.


CITIZEN COMMENTS: Mike Hitchcliff, resident, thanked the Parks and Recreation Department for all their hard work; the landscaping in the City looks fantastic. He wanted to request that the Commission consider installing shade canopies over the picnic tables at Wheatfield Park.

7. DISCUSSION ITEM: Start a discussion as to Measure WW projects for 2013. (R. Stromgren)
Discussion included the need for shade, whether it come from shade canopies or trees; trail connectors; and lighting at tennis courts, especially Creekside Park. Roger Stromgren will research the costs and logistics of these suggestions, and bring the results to a future meeting.

Roger Stromgren informed the Commission that the bocce court renovations at Veterans Park will cost $105K for the shade structures and amenities. The bids for the additional court construction go out July 30th. We are taking the Tree City USA proposal to the City Council next month.

Poldina Scherff informed the Commission that the Brentwood Family Aquatic Center will be open on weekends only, starting this weekend, through September 30, 2012. The Parks and Recreation Department has implemented its Volunteer Ambassador Program, and currently 5 volunteers are rotating shifts at the Community Center front desk. The Concert Series is winding down, and we have only 3 more concerts, including the Play Day Children’s Concert on August 17th. Parks and Recreation is hosting several events in City Park; in October - Movie Night and Scarecrows in the Park, and in December – The Hospice Tree of Lights and Santa’s Workshop.

Commissioner Lind wanted to thank staff for the quick responses to City Sourced work requests and inquired about the replacement slide at McClarren Park. Staff responded that the slide should be in by now. She also forwarded an inquiry from the public about the possibility of having an indoor play area, for unstructured play, on very hot or rainy days. Vice Chair Mulder complimented staff on the keeping Brentwood looking so nice; it’s a pleasure to live here.
