REGULAR MEETING
May 26, 2011 at 7 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER: Chair Lind called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Present were Chair Blythe Lind, Vice Chair Alyssa Madden, Commissioner Eileen Hofstadt and Commissioner Bruce Mulder. Commissioner Sandra Myers was excused absent. Staff members present were: Roger Stromgren, Park/Maintenance Manager; Barry Margesson, Park/Manager Supervisor; and Linda Stadlbauer, Administrative Assistant II.

PRESENTATION(S): Chris Cook from Boy Scouts presented a PowerPoint slideshow of his Eagle Scout project; the installation of mile markers along 6 Brentwood area trails. He thanked City park staff for their assistance, and the Commissioners and staff thanked him for a job well done.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:
6. VERBAL UPDATE: Verbal update on Universal Abilities Playgrounds and Tree City USA. (R. Stromgren)
Roger Stromgren updated the Commission on the progress of the Universal Abilities Playground. Discussion included the use of City funds, labor laws, fundraising opportunities, and the design and cost of other universal playgrounds.

Roger also informed the Commission that the City has been awarded Tree City USA for 2010, and we will be displaying the signs at various locations around the City.

STAFF COMMENTS
Barry Margesson complimented Chris Cook on the trail markers, and informed the Commission that staff planted 70 trees along Armstrong Road, assisted by the Mormon Helping Hands organization.

Roger Stromgren updated the Commission about the citywide Tree Program; 185 trees will be planted in the next 6 weeks, this includes two 36” box trees, one at the Rockwell Circle round about, and one at the Garin Parkway/Spruce Street round about, both will be Aptos Blue Redwoods. As part of the downtown renovation project, another 98 trees will be included in that project.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Hofstadt informed the Commission that the Playful Cities Taskforce met earlier tonight, and they will have the application for the next year completed by June 11, 2011. We should know by the end of July whether we are approved for renewal. We will be promoting Playport to Fun through the library, PTAs, local gyms, and preschools.

Commissioner Mulder reported that he attended the Youth Commission meeting on May 4, and was very impressed by the leadership represented there. The Youth Commission will be presenting “a year in review” to City Council on June 28th, and will be at the Water Fun Nite on August 26th. Commissioner Mulder offered the full support of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
