Minutes for August 10, 2011
Regular Meeting

CALL TO ORDER: Meeting called to order at 6:37 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Johnny Staton, Steve Smith, Claudette Naturel-Staton, Cecilia Skuza, Rick Fuller, Karen Nunez, Councilmember Bob Brockman and Staff Liaisons Barbie Gary and Michele Keady were present. Absent from the meeting were members Alfredo Garcia, Cheryl Nickerson, Arthur Koski and Tammy Lynn Misenheimer.


ANNOUNCEMENTS: Staff Liaison Gary introduced a Brentwood resident who was observing BANC as part of becoming a member.


1. Approve regular meeting minutes of July 13, 2011. Motion to approve the minutes, with corrections, made by Karen Nunez and seconded by Steve Smith. Motion approved 6-0.

2. DISCUSSION ITEM: Review National Night Out event held August 2, 2011. Staff Liaison Keady led the discussion regarding how the National Night Out event went and asked BANC members for feedback. The group decided to select a “Spirit Award” winner from all the neighborhoods who participated and a presentation from BANC will take place on Monday, August 18th at 6:30 p.m.

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discussion regarding the annual Christmas Tree Lighting scheduled for December 2, 2011 at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center. Staff Liaison Gary updated the group that Tammy Lynn Misenheimer had secured someone to play Santa Claus at the event. The group discussed how to obtain a large amount of cookies to give away to participants and possibly baking them before the event at the Senior Center. Staff Liaison Gary indicated that a county health department permit may be required to bake the cookies, which runs around $150.00. Council member Brockman suggested that BANC contact the Brentwood Rotary Club for possibly food cooking assistance. BANC members decided to model this year’s event after last year’s event with some small changes, such as issuing a meal ticket to performers receiving pizza in an effort to prevent non-performers from obtaining the food.

4. ACTION ITEM: Approve participation in the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce’s Hometown Halloween event on Saturday, October 22, 2011 and approve the application fee of up to $50 for a booth at the event. Members agreed that they would like to participate in this year’s Hometown Halloween event and will use the event to hand out flyers regarding the upcoming Christmas Tree Lighting, in addition to handing out a Halloween treat. Motion to approve participation in Hometown Halloween and spending up to $50 for the application fee made by Steve Smith and seconded by Karen Nunez. Motion approved 6-0.

INFORMATIONAL REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE MEMBERS, SUBCOMMITTEES AND LIAISONS: Councilman Brockman shared insights in to the controversy of Brentwood having its own fire department, the costs to the City versus a District fire department with other cities participating. He also noted that the owners of the property at Sand Creek Road and Brentwood Boulevard are talking to WalMart about putting a store on the property as the site is designated for a "Big Box" retailer. BANC members expressed their displeasure in having WalMart come to Brentwood. BANC members suggested retailers such as Nordstrom,
Crate and Barrel, and Pottery Barn. Councilman Brockman updated BANC members on the downtown revitalization projected which he stated is on schedule to be finished as planned and that the Brentwood downtown arch/art piece would be installed on August 15th & 16th.

REQUEST FOR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: Review National Night Out, discuss Halloween Home of the Month, the Christmas Tree Lighting event, how to attract more residents to join BANC and review BANC’s finances.
