Minutes for January 13, 2010
Regular Meeting

CALL TO ORDER: Meeting called to order at 6:09 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Committee members Alfredo Garcia, Cecilia Skuza, Cheryl Nickerson, Karen Nunez, Rick Fuller, and Stephen Smith were in attendance. Council member Brandon Richey and Staff Liaisons, Michele Keady and Barbie Gary were also in attendance.




1. Approve special meeting minutes of November 4, 2009. Motion to approve the minutes made by Cheryl Nickerson and seconded by Karen Nunez . Approved 6-0.

2. DISCUSSION ITEM: Feedback and discussion of the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony held on November 21, 2009. Committee members discussed the various pros and cons of the recent Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.

Pros: Working with the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce
Cons: Event long with both parade and tree lighting
Event disjointed / lack of coordination at the event working with the Chamber
Christmas trailer broke down too early
Police Department was anxious to get street cleaned

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss and assemble a list of individuals, City staff, and community groups to invite to make presentations at future BANC meetings. Committee members suggested contacting the following individuals or groups:
• Friends of Marsh Creek
• City Parks and Recreation Staff
• CERT program
• Brentwood Police regarding gang activity in Brentwood
• International Orphan Relief

4. ACTION ITEM: Determine format for 2010 Home of the Month program and approve a budget not to exceed $400 to purchase program supplies. The committee discussed how the Home of the Season presentation went in December and decided that it would be beneficial to start the paperwork process related to each monthly winner about a month in advance so that there is adequate time to obtain signatures on various paperwork items. Additionally, members discussed developing a flyer that can be left at a home selected as the monthly winner, notifying the homeowner of their selection, in the event the homeowner is not at home when a BANC member stops by and also ensuring that the homeowners will be home on the date of the presentation.
Rick Fuller made a motion to approve a budget not to exceed $400 to purchase program supplies and Cecilia Skuza seconded the motion. Motion approved 6-0.

5. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss goals for BANC for 2010 in relation to BANC’s mission and goals. Members discussed various goals for BANC including the continuation of the Home of the Month program, how to increase BANC’s visibility, attract new members and give back to the community. Suggestions included articles about BANC in the Brentwood Press and posting flyers related to BANC events in park kiosks.

6. ACTION ITEM: Nomination of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer for 2010. The following members were nominated for each office:
Chair: Claudette Natural-Staton and Rick Fuller
Vice-Chair: None (the committee agreed that the person not selected as Chair would be offered the position of Vice-Chair)
Secretary: Karen Nunez
Treasurer: Stephan Smith
Public Relations: Johnny Staton

Cheryl Nickerson made a motion to approve the nomination of the above listed members for BANC offices for 2010. Motion seconded by Karen Nunez and approved 6-0. Elections will take place at the regularly scheduled meeting in March.


Council member Richey shared with BANC members that there has been an increase in crime in Brentwood, particularly in the downtown area. He also mentioned that the City’s budget looks good mid-year, books are tight, but finances are in good shape. Council member Richey noted that decorative art was stolen from Veteran’s Park and monies were approved to replace the artwork. An effort to make the replacement art work theft-proof is being reviewed.

Community Service Officer Michele Keady shared that the Brentwood Police Department is diligently working on crime in the area and have issued an Alert Bulletin to downtown merchants. She also stated that arrests are imminent and cases will be closed soon.


REQUEST FOR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: BANC Officer Election, monthly presentation, Home of the Month assignments.

ADJOURNMENT: Rick Fuller made a motion to adjourn at 7:37 p.m. Cheryl Nickerson seconded the motion.
