REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
October 17, 2012 AT 7:00 P.M.
COUNCIL CHAMBERS

CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Jack Gaughan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

ROLL CALL:
Present were Vice Chair Jack Gaughan and Commissioners Juan Castillo, and Danny Senn. Chair Donna Spencer and Commissioner Barbie Koncher were excused. Staff members present were Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager and Elaine McGurk, Administrative Assistant II.

CITIZEN COMMENTS: NONE

CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. Approve minutes of regular meeting of September 19, 2012.

 Motion to approve the minutes of September 19, 2012.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:
2. ACTION ITEM: Accept and approve the Liberty High School Arts and Humanities Academy utility box public art project, local agriculture designs and five locations and forward to City Council to approve. (P. Scherff)

Two students made their final presentation before the Arts Commission of the chosen option of graphic/pop art inspired representation of Brentwood’s agriculture.

 Motion to Accept and approve the Liberty High School Arts and Humanities Academy utility box public art project in the amount of $10,706 and forward to City Council to approve.

3. ACTION ITEM: Accept and approve possible public art project ideas for the downtown and forward to City Council to approve. (P. Scherff)

Discussion ensued about the three suggested types of public art projects; however, with two Commissioners absent, it was suggested this item be tabled for a future meeting.

 

 

 Motion to table this item for a future meeting.

4. ACTION ITEM: Accept and approve the Public Art Wall submissions for the Brentwood Community Center and forward to City Council to approve.

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, distributed the list of artists and schedule for the Public Wall Submission for 2013.

The DiscoveryArt League will fill in any open spaces with a contest they are holding in the near future.

 Motion to Accept and approve the Public Art Wall submissions for the Brentwood Community Center and forward to City Council to approve.

5. ACTION ITEM: Discuss the Arts Commissions’ availability to attend the regularly scheduled Arts Commission meeting on November 21, 2012 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday and approve a new date, if needed. (P. Scherff)

 Motion to approve the cancellation of the next regularly scheduled meeting of November 21 and reschedule a special meeting for November 14.

6. VERBAL UPDATE: Balfour Road Public Art Project – Public Art Request for Qualifications. (P. Scherff)

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, informed the Commission that City Legal Counsel has returned the changes to be made on the Request for Qualification (RFQ) yesterday. The RFQ will be going out in the next couple of days with a due date back on November 16.

The RFQ will be made available via email, website, and/or phone calls. A news release will also be done for this.

This item will be brought back at a future meeting for further update and discussion.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: NONE

 

STAFF COMMENTS:
Poldina Scherff mentioned two things.
1. October 19 – Scarecrows in the Park. There were 18 submissions total. 6 will be presented from staff and 12 are from the public.
2. October 26 – Movies in the Park. “Casper the friendly Ghost” will be shown in City Park.
