Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - March 21, 2012

February 15, 2012 AT 7:00 P.M.

CALL TO ORDER: Chair Spencer called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Present were Chair Donna Spencer, Vice Chair Jack Gaughan and Commissioners Barbie Koncher and Danny Senn. Commissioner Juan Castillo was excused. Staff members present were Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager and Elaine McGurk, Administrative Assistant II.

1. Approve minutes of regular meeting of February 15, 2012.

2. ACTION ITEM: Approve recommendation to City Council for the re-appointment of Poet Laureate, Kati Short term July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2014. (P. Scherff)

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, gave a brief re-cap from a previous meeting that Kati Short accepted the re-appointment of Poet Laureate for another term therefore the Commission needs to approve this recommendation to City Council for final approval.

3. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss the possibility of accepting a baby grand piano for the Brentwood Community Center. (J. Gaughan)

Poldina Scherff spoke with Ernie, the gentlemen who is in possession of the baby grand piano, and has learned that this piano is located in a Walnut Creek music store. As their conversation progressed, Poldina found out that this piano is for purchase and not being donated.

Poldina Scherff mentioned to the Commission that the City does not have money allocated for items such as this however in the future if there is piano for donation, the Commission can discuss further on how they can accept it.

4. VERBAL UPDATE: Arts Commission presentation to City Council moved to April 10, 2012. (P. Scherff)

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, informed the Commission that the presentation regarding the list of prioritized list of entry ways was not presented at the last Council Meeting due to issues the Council had prior to the meeting. They had follow up questions that needed to be answered and to ensure all information is answered it was decided to best pull this item from the meeting and present it at a later meeting.

This item will be brought back at the April 10 City Council Meeting. Poldina Scherff will submit a new staff report with details that give a detailed background on how the Public Art money was gathered and when. It will also list all the public art pieces currently in town. The staff report will also reveal the timeline of how the Commission has decided on what is now the list of possible sites and prioritized the location list for projects.

Commissioner Senn will make this presentation on April 10 if all goes as planned.


Commissioner Koncher: She gave a presentation before a Cub Scout Troop for their completion of an Art Merit Badge. The kids were receptive to her presentation on how Art Works with City Government.

Commissioner Senn: He inquired about discussing the quasi guidelines for the art wall. Poldina Scherff said she bring this topic up in an upcoming meeting for discussion.

Vice Chair Gaughan:
1. He announced that this year Broadway Under the Stars will be presenting two shows at the Heritage Theater in June and July. From June 15 – July 1 Oklahoma will be presented and from July 13 – July 29 Brigadoon presented.
2. Farmers Market will be back starting March 31, 2012 and run through November 17, 2012. They are scheduled to be there every Saturday from 8am – Noon on First Street, between Chestnut and Oak Street.


Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager:
1. She gave an update on Liberty High School Art Academy mural of an underwater delta theme at the tunnel located at King Park. Unfortunately, after much progress, the mural was vandalized and graffiti was covered on majority of the mural. Cameras will be installed and turned to focus the tunnel in hopes to capture the person who is doing this.
2. On May 19, there will be a grand opening of the Civic Center/Community Center and City park that the Commissioners will be invited. Invitation will be going out shortly.
3. Summer Concert Series will be back at City Park starting June 15. It will take place every Friday for 8 weeks (with exception to the Friday of Cornfest weekend) from 7-9 pm. This is a free event for families to enjoy. A great selection of music has been selected by a sub committee consisting of a Park & Recreation Commissioner, Arts Commissioner, Senior Representative, and staff.
