Arts Commission Meeting Minutes - July 18, 2012

ARTS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
JULY 18, 2012 AT 7:00 P.M.
COUNCIL CHAMBERS
150 CITY PARK WAY
BRENTWOOD, CA 94513

CALL TO ORDER: Chair Spencer called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.

ROLL CALL:
Present were Chair Donna Spencer, Vice Chair Jack Gaughan and Commissioners Barbie Koncher and Danny Senn. Commissioner Juan Castillo was excused. Staff members present were Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager and Elaine McGurk, Administrative Assistant II.

CITIZEN COMMENTS: None

CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. Approve minutes of regular meeting of May 16, 2012.

 Motion to approve the minutes of May 16, 2012.

2. Approve minutes of regular meeting of June 20, 2012.

 Item tabled until the next meeting.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:
3. ACTION ITEM: Accept and approve the second poetry anthology publication by Poet Laureate Kati Short and forward to City Council to approve. (P. Scherff)

Katie Short, Poet Laureate, requested before the Commission for an additional $700 for the second poetry anthology. She will have more books printed and the book will contain more pages as well. Poldina Scherff reminded the Commission that once the money is used up in the Art Administration account, the money will not be replenished.

Ms. Short informed the Commission that the sale of the books will be increased to $11 from $10. She is requesting for more money due to the increase of paper and ink. The call for submission will be done through the newspaper as well as Facebook.

4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss the possible public art options for the downtown. (P. Scherff)

At the next meeting, a tour of the downtown will take place after the start of the meeting. It was suggested that tiles could be sold to acquire an art future for the downtown area. A suggestion of having a clock placed for decoration. It was also suggested to place more bike racks in the downtown area. Currently there a few by the City Park however it would be convenient to have them throughout the downtown area by the shops.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: None

STAFF COMMENTS:

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager:
1. Concerts in the Park are half way completed. The annual play day will take place at City Park on August 17. AndyZ and the Andyland Band (Kiddie Rock) will be performing this day.
2. The City Attorney has reviewed information regarding the Community Center Art Wall. The document has been revised by staff per the suggestion of the City Attorney. This document will be presented to the Arts Commission in August and forwarded to the City Council for approval in September.
3. The staff report regarding Art on Balfour will be presented to the City Council for approval on either August 14 or August 28.
4. Kate Collins with the Liberty High School Art Academy will be coming with some students to the next meeting. They will be proposing another project before the Commission.
