ARTS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
FEBRUARY 17, 2010 AT 7:00 P.M.
COUNCIL CHAMBERS
101 B SAND CREEK ROAD
BRENTWOOD, CA 94513

 

CALL TO ORDER: Chair Wanda Groseclose called the meeting to order at 7:20 p.m.

ROLL CALL:
Present were, Chair Wanda Groseclose and Commissioners Danny Senn and Donna Spencer. Commissioner Barbie Koncher was excused. Vice Chair Juan Castillo was absent. Staff members present were Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager and Elaine McGurk, Administrative Assistant II.

PRESENTATION:
1. Swearing in of new Commissioner Danny Senn. (Vice Mayor E. Stonebarger)

Vice Mayor Stonebarger swore in new Commissioner Danny Senn and welcomed him to the Commission.

CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. Approve minutes of regular meeting of January 20, 2010

 Item has been tabled to next meeting due to lack of quorum.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:
1. DISCUSSION ITEM: Update on the critter replacement, art element for the poetry contest and discuss the future unveiling. (P. Scherff)

Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, gave background information regarding this project to the new Commissioner Senn. She spoke about installation of security cameras prior to the reinstallation of the critters. Commissioner Senn inquired about the material used for the plaques and Poldina Scherff said the plaques are made of stainless steel.

Poldina Scherff mentioned that the copper thief has struck again, Sunset Park and an attempt was made at Oak Meadow Park.

It was mentioned that the critters in Veterans Park are maintained by the Park & Recreation Department maintenance staff.

2. ACTION ITEM: Election of Officers. (P. Scherff)

With absence of Commissioners Barbie Koncher and Juan Castillo, the rest of the Commission felt that it would be appropriate to table this item until the next meeting in March.

OLD BUSINESS: NONE

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS:
Commissioner Spencer looks forward to the unveiling of the poems next month.

Chair Groseclose inquired about whether the Commission will help in approving the artwork to be displayed in the new Civic Center. Poldina Scherff explained that the pieces have already been decided on and approved by City Council. Chair Groseclose inquired about the artwork to be placed in the Library. Poldina Scherff explained that it will probably be a year before the Commission will be needed in deciding what type of artwork will be displayed. The expansion of the Library will be part of the 2nd phase of the new Civic Center project. Until the Community Development Department has moved out to the new facility, the Library will be unable to expand.

STAFF COMMENTS:
Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, plans on doing a PowerPoint presentation at the next meeting in regards to the art elements in the town.
