REGULAR MEETING MINUTES
NOVEMBER 19, 2008 AT 7:00 P.M.

CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Greg Ruiz called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

ROLL CALL: Commissioners Present: Greg Ruiz, Wanda Groseclose, and Karen Halbe Juan Castillo (absent-excused)
Staff Present: Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager; and Linda Stadlbauer, Administrative Assistant II.

PRESENTATIONS: Arts Commission – special thank you to Arts Society’s Art, Wine and Jazz Festival and Peggy Schuitemaker, who was the coordinator. Chairman Ruiz graciously thanked the Society as being very professional and the event as wonderfully collaborated and executed. The Commission is looking forward to next year’s Art and Wine Festival, and invites the Society to come to the Arts Commission with a request for financial support. At this time, Jan Melloni also announced the newest elementary school in Brentwood was to be named in honor of Mary Black, who is present at this Arts Commission meeting.

SCHEDULED MATTERS:
2. Action Item : Approve and recommend to City Council revised Chapter 2.44 ARTS Ordinance. (C. Bronzan)
Craig Bronzan presented his Staff Report with the recommended changes. Commission and staff discussed changes and agreed to accept the changes.

3. Discussion Item : Discuss revisions to the Public Art Guidelines. (C. Bronzan)
Craig Bronzan presented his Staff Report with the recommended changes. Commission and staff discussed changes and agreed to accept the changes with the exception that Commissioner Ruiz reiterated that he would still like to see a current Arts Commissioner at the City Council’s review of the nomination of a new Arts Commissioner.

OLD BUSINESS:
4. STATUS REPORT: Update on the art element for the poetry contest and the critter replacement at Veterans Park. (P. Scherff)
Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, informed the Commission that Eric Powell was
contacted, and will be here for the January meeting to make his presentation. The Commission congratulated staff on their hard work and were excited about their first artist contract and the new direction of the Arts Commission.

COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: Commissioner Groseclose presented calling cards of various local artists to Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager. Chair Ruiz thanked Commissioner Groseclose for stepping up for the Children’s Wall at the Streets of Brentwood. Coordinator for Streets of Brentwood wants to collaborate with Arts Commission in future. He also was curious if there would be artwork at the New Senior Center. Poldina Scherff responded “no”.

STAFF COMMENTS: Staff advised the Commission that the new Commissioners would be scheduled for the 2nd City Council Meeting. Also that the Grand Opening for the new Brentwood Senior Activity Center is scheduled for January 9, 2009.
