ARTS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING MINUTES MAY 19, 2010 AT 7:00 P.M. COUNCIL CHAMBERS 101 B SAND CREEK ROAD BRENTWOOD, CA 94513 CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Danny Senn called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. ROLL CALL: PRESENTATION: Mr. Bruce Chaban, a sculptor has done work with other Cities that include San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston. His primarily does metal work. His work has been displayed in various cities and are purchased for display at private residences. Majority of his pieces have found a home in Cleveland, Ohio. He works with other metals like stainless steel and bronze as well. His work shows very intricate links. He is very capable of moving his pieces to various locations for showing although they look heavy and bulky. His work takes an average of 2-3 months. He is very open to ideas that others may have in what he should sculpt. CITIZEN COMMENTS: NONE CONSENT CALENDAR: Motion to approve the minutes of April 21, 2010 Minutes Kati Short and Diane Lando were both present at this meeting. Unfortunately, the third candidate Steven Seager was unable to attend. Ms. Short and Ms. Lando both presented a self written poem to the Commission. Ms. Short presented a poem entitled “My Brentwood” while Ms. Lando read a poem in memory of Bruce Stewart. Ms. Short had spent 8 years in Korea teaching English. Ms. Lando requested that in the future, more direction and/or guidance as to whom the poem would be written about. Poldina Scherff responded that the City does not have any specific guidelines but has opened that up to the Poet Laureate to create. Commissioner Groseclose has suggested that the Commission hold off in selecting a Poet Laureate until the third candidate, Steven Seager had his opportunity to present his work before the Commission. Commissioner Spencer would then like to be able to discuss which candidate would be of a good fit for this position. Motion to approve a special meeting on June 16 at 6:30 pm to hear from the third Candidate Steven Seager. Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, reported back that the installation of security cameras began on May 19th. Eric Powell will be out the first week of June to install the critters. A date will need to be selected for the unveiling of the poetry contest art elements. Motion to approve the 1st choice date of Tuesday, June 15 at 10 am and 2nd choice date of June 16 at 10 am for the unveiling of the poetry contest art element at Veterans Park. 4. DISCUSSION ITEM: Discuss the current and future public art locations and the funding available. (P. Scherff) Poldina Scherff, Recreation Manager, handed out a revised map of where the public art is displayed. Some of the areas explained have delays in the project and others may not be taking place at this time. Poldina Scherff suggested that they all take a “walk-about” town to see all the public art. Vice Chair Senn inquired about the budget amount. Poldina Scherff said there is over $300,000 for public art. He also commented that the presentation on the Civic Center shown at the City Council meeting was very well thought out. It incorporated the old Hotel that was in town through the facade of the building. Commissioner Koncher inquired about the timeline for the new City Hall. It was said the building may be done by June/July 2011. Conversation ensued about the Cornfest. Poldina Scherff commented that the Cornfest will be held in the downtown area. They will be closing off 1st Street and parts down by the Liberty High School and the Post office. Commissioner Koncher also mentioned that the Arts Jazz and Wine Festival will be held at The Streets of Brentwood this year. Poldina Scherff said at the next meeting an item will be brought back to discuss the tour, draft route and date.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS: Commissioner Koncher will not be in attendance for the July and August meetings. STAFF COMMENTS: REQUEST FOR FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: ADJOURNMENT |
