Description: DSCF6790.JPGThe City has achieved a SILVER LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for this project.  These sustainable measures and environmental strategies were developed to ensure the project is environmentally sound:

  • Water – Landscape and site design will reduce water use.  All landscaping will used reclaimed water.
  • Typical water reduction on LEED buildings is 20%; this project will achieve a 40% reduction. 
  • Materials – Use of recycled and recyclable materials.  Several materials in the project have at least a 20% post industrial or post consumer recycled content.
  • Construction – Recycling of construction waste diverts about 90% of construction waste from landfills.
  • Indoor Air Quality – The use of products with reduced volatile organic compounds, provisions for additional outside air ventilation above normal codes via the HVAC system, and refrigerants without CFCs improve the air quality. 
  • Natural Light – The buildings optimize natural daylight and incorporate occupancy sensors and dimming systems which save energy and cost.
  • Description: DSCF6786.JPGEnergy Efficiency – Efficient building systems reduce energy consumption and produce clean solar energy on site, thereby lowering operating costs.
  • Cool roof and paving – Use of a reflective coating on the metal roof  provides less heat gain into the buildings.  Similarly, the use of light colored paving means less heat emissions.
  •  Stormwater Quality – Use of infiltration planters to clean the roof water run off and permeable pavers throughout the site ensures that the water is scrubbed before entering the public storm drain systems.
  • Education / Awareness – Placement of public awareness signage to explain the various sustainable strategies, materials and systems used in this project.
  • Alternative Transportation – The Parking Structure includes 9 stalls with chargers for electric vehicles, walkable access to nearby services and public transportation, and bike storage, promoting alternatives to vehicle use and reducing emissions.
  • Shading – Use of exterior louvers at many windows, window shades and a deep roof overhang block a large percentage of heat via shading.
  • Solar – Photovoltaic panels on the Parking Structure generate energy and reduce the cost of electricity to the buildings.
  • Innovation – Green cleaning products and procedures are being used for ongoing maintenance.

GREEN ROOFS
There are two green roofs on the City Hall and one on the Community Center.  Our green roof system is an extension of the existing roof which involves a high quality water proofing, root repellant system, a drainage system, filter cloth, lightweight growing medium and plants.  Green roofs provide many benefits, including the following:

  

 

  • Waste Diversion – Green roofs can contribute to landfill diversion by:
    • Prolonging the life of waterproofing membranes, reducing associated waste.
    • The use of recycled materials in the growing medium
    • Prolonging the service life of the HVAC system through decreased use.

    • With green roofs, water is stored by the soil and then taken up by the plants where it is returned to the atmosphere through transpiration and evaporation.
    • In summer, depending on the plants and depth of growing medium, green roofs retain 70 – 90% of the precipitation that falls on them; in winter they retain between 25 – 40%.
    • Green roofs not only retain rainwater, but also moderate the temperature of the water and act as natural filters for any of the water that happens to run off.
    • Green roofs reduce the amount of stormwater runoff and also delay the time at which runoff occurs, resulting in decreased stress on the building and waterways.
  • Improved Air Quality
    • The plants on green roofs can capture airborne pollutants and atmospheric deposition.
    • The plants can filter noxious gases.
    • The temperature moderating effects of green roofs can reduce demand on power plants and potentially decrease the amount of CO2 and other polluting by-products being released into the air.
  • Energy Efficiency
    • The greater insulation offered by green roofs can reduce the amount of energy needed to moderate the temperature of a building, as roofs are the sight of the greatest heat loss in the winter and the hottest temperatures in the summer.
